âWhy the hell isnât Shaun texting me back,â Jenni said as we all gathered in my living room.
âHe and Nathan are probably drunk as fuck and passed out in their suite.â Grace smiled.
âLetâs see where theyâre at,â Jenni said. âIt looks like theyâre at a residence on East 74th Street.â Her brows furrowed.
Suddenly, a sick feeling filled my belly.
âLet me see that.â I grabbed Jenniâs phone from her hand and stared at it. âOh, my God!â I placed my hand over my mouth.
âWhat is it, Sof?â Julia asked.
âSof, whatâs wrong?â Alex asked.
My heart raced out of my chest. âTheyâre at my motherâs house.â
âOh shit,â Georgia spoke. âAre you sure?â
âI swear to God. Iâm going to kill Nathan. Why would they go there?â I looked at the girls.
âMaybe Shaun wanted to say hi.â Jenni chewed her bottom lip.
âReally, Jen? I canât believe Nathan would do that and not tell me.â
âCalm down,â Grace gripped my shoulders. âYou donât know whatâs going on. Nathan is going to tell you. Iâll bet any money that when he Facetimes you, heâll tell you all about it and why he and Shaun were there. Letâs wait and see how this plays out. Jenni, donât tell Shaun that you know he was there. Because if Nathan is keeping it a secret, Shaun will tell him that you know, and he knows that youâd tell Sofia.â
âRight. I wonât tell him that I know.â
âAnd how the hell am I supposed to act when he calls, knowing that he saw my mother?â
âYou act casually as if you donât know,â Emilia spoke.
âChances are he might wait to tell you when he gets home. He knows itâs a sensitive topic and may not want to do it over the phone,â Charlotte said.
âIâm going to kill him!â
My phone rang, and when I looked down at it, Nathan was Facetiming me.
âCome on, girls. Letâs go home,â Grace said. âYou got this, Sof. Text or call if you need any of us.â
âIâll be over in a flash,â Charlotte said.
I picked up my phone, took a deep breath, and answered his call.
âHey.â My lips gave way to a fake smile.
âHi, gorgeous. What took you so long to answer?â
âI was upstairs, and my phone was in the kitchen. How was your evening?â
âGood. Shaun and I had a nice dinner, and then we came back to the suite and kicked back a few drinks.
Liar.
âSounds fun.â
âWere the girls over?â he asked.
âYeah. They left a while ago.â
âHow are my children?â
âTheyâre good.â
âWhatâs wrong? You seem off,â he said.
âI do? Iâm sorry. Itâs been a long day, and Iâm tired.â
âGo to bed, babe, and get some rest. Iâll see you tomorrow. I love you and miss you so much.â
âI miss and love you too, Nathan. See you tomorrow.â
I ended the call and held my phone against my chest as I let out a breath. He lied to me. I called Jenni.
âHey,â she answered.
âDid Shaun Facetime you?â I asked.
âYeah. All he said was that he and Nathan went to dinner, then returned to the hotel and kicked back a few drinks.
